May Be The Most Illegally Downloaded TV Show in History

The Grand Tour may actually be the most illegally downloaded/watched TV show in history. Managed to beat out Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Westworld.

Seems no one wants to pay for Amazon Prime....

7.9 million illegal downloads for the first episode
6.4 million illegal downloads for the second episode
4.6 million illegal downloads for the third episode

British viewers make up 13.7 percent of the audience watching illegally.

Amazon lost more than $4 million dollars alone for that premiere episode alone. That's a lot of darn money to lose out to bootleggers.

NO surprise there as the original Top Gear trio had a huge following, but I see the downloads have been decreasing each episode. The Grand Tour may need to rethink their second season.

Honestly, I don't really see any way that they'll be able to put this out there without it getting streamed somewhere else and download and whatever. It's impossible to stop it. Kinda surprised the numbers weren't higher

This is a good thing. Yes it means a lot of revenue lost but it means that many more eyeballs were watching which is important for a new shows. Odds are those people are hooked now.

All Amazon has to do is make the show available in such a way it can't be ripped nearly as easily, there are ways to embed. But at the same time always ways to rip it.

There are so many ways around these blockages and security measures people take, but it does help to try and make it that much harder. But you are right, there definitely is a bright side to this. The attention is still getting out there are a lot more people are getting to see it. This can aid in many other ways.

best way to see it is how music is shared online and I bet you if we were still stuck in the CD age there's a lot of artists that wouldn't be heard.

so paying that price upfront in exchange to be seen and hear can be a powerful thing for the long run.

maybe what they need to do is start providing something more of an incentive to watch the show on verified platforms.

Maybe some sort of member exclusive contest for a giveaway or something ? Something that requires you to input your paid ID to enter ?

Sure sounds like a way to go about it. Even if it was a matter of getting The Grand Tour apparel by that method then a lot of people would sign up.

Amazon being Amazon, odds are in some boardroom they're already thinking of ways to have this done.

There's no way they come this far as a compaany and don't get beyond minor set backs like this.

That's a for sure. I wouldn't doubt they have dedicated teams for this type of situations as this isn't the first show they've had. It's only a matter of time for them to start implementing different methods either by offering incentives or stepping up security or a combination.

On the flip side with all the viewership they're getting it will boost their ability to get better advertisers and even sponsors for the show and that alone can go a long way for the whole shows ecosystem (if you want to call it that)

Going to be interesting to see how far it grows and the actual viewership numbers after 6 months, a year of it being around.
